Creative Review‘The Annual Cover'

Creative Review Cover One of our favorite publications, Creative Review, approached us about handling the cover for their annual review and launch of their new iPad application. With a load of respect for the magazine and an itching desire to test out a graphic data collection concept we’d been working on, we decided to create more than just a cover. The only way to represent the magazine and its prolific content was to create the Annual “A” constructed from elements of CR’s web and twitter content. Stopping at the simple graphic for the cover would’ve been far too easy, so we created an application that allows users to interact with the cover and get fully immersed in its deeper meaning. Since the Creative Review Annual covers such a wide array of stories we gathered the images, names, places, hashtags and usernames from the last year’s articles and used those to make up strips or images that became the “A” for our cover. However, our graphic data collection didn’t stop there, in order to graphically represent how “big” a story was we sized the strips based on how many comments a story got, giving us a proper metric to determine a story’s size. It may sound a bit heady for a magazine cover, but Creative Review isn’t your typical magazine and we hate being predicable.
